Born in 1965, I was raised in Dallas, GA living only a rock throws distance from my Grandparents (Hollis & Polly). My other Grandparents (JB & Ethel)lived in Tucker, GA and when we would go visit it was like we were going on vacation because the drive, back then, took forever. They eventually moved closer making it easier to visit with them. Both of my Grandmothers were fantastic cooks and I learned so much growing up with them. My Mama and Daddy are also fantastic cooks and they taught me even more. Dirt roads and creek wadin' was part of growing up, as well as, hard work when the garden would come in, helping out with the rest of the family.
I am a Wife, Mother and Grandmother of eight. The hussle and bussle of a growing city became overwhelming and we moved to West Virginia back in 2006. I have always preferred a "simpler" way of life and we found it here.
In Dec. of 2012 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Vulvar Cancer. When my husband and I took a camping trip, after 3 grueling months of chemo and radiation, that is when I decided to come home and start Janet's Appalachian Kitchen on Facebook. Every recipe on that page is cooked in my own kitchen to share with folks, nothing professional about it, just down home cookin'.
The good Lord has Blessed me in so many ways and it just thrilled my heart when I hear how I have touched others through my stories, recipes and cookbooks, which are all sold out. I used to question "why am I still here" but I now feel God has a plan for me that is still unfolding.
