Upside Down Frosting Cake

1 1/3 C. self rising flour
1 C. sugar
1/2 C. shortening
2/3 C. milk
2 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Frosting:
1/2 C. chocolate syrup
1/2 C. water
1/3 C. sugar
In a large mixing bowl, beat together the flour, sugar, shortening, milk, eggs and vanilla for 2 minutes, until smooth. Pour batter into an 8x8 pan that has been coated with cooking spray. Whisk together the frosting ingredients and pour evenly over the cake batter. DO NOT STIR. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 40 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Can this recipe/cake be made with another kind of frosting? Or just leave it out altogether? I would like a frosting just not chocolate.
